Desiigner will not be required to register as a sex offender, according to his lawyer Ryan Garry. This announcement aims to correct rumors and false reports that emerged following Desiigner’s sentencing. The rapper, whose real name is Sidney Royel Selby III, was sentenced to 120 hours of community service and fined $5,000. He will remain on probation for the next two years.
The rumors regarding Desiigner registering as a sex offender were widely circulated in the media. His lawyer emphasized that many news outlets incorrectly reported that sex offender registration was an absolute condition of his probation, stating that they were wrong.
Garry clarified that Desiigner’s sentencing judgment indicated that if the State of California or another government entity required him to register as a sex offender, he would have to comply. However, they believe that Desiigner’s misdemeanor conviction is not one that should result in sex offender registration.
Desiigner’s sentencing followed an incident in which he was caught masturbating by a Delta flight crew during a flight from Tokyo, Japan, to Minneapolis on April 17. According to the Daily Mail UK, the rapper attributed his behavior to a combination of factors, including dehydration, exhaustion from touring, marijuana ingestion, and medication received from a hospital in Thailand. He later checked himself into a mental facility for treatment.
Desiigner’s lawyer suggested that the circumstances surrounding the incident and the rapper’s subsequent actions indicate that it was a misdemeanor, not an offense that requires sex offender registration. However, Garry acknowledged that the final determination could be made by a government agency in California. If such an agency disagrees with their analysis, they will address the matter accordingly.
