The Mipcom Cannes international TV conference commenced on a somber tone, as Market Director Lucy Smith paid tribute to the “innocent victims in Israel and Gaza.”
Smith addressed the repercussions of the Israel-Hamas conflict on the market and the industry. Due to the devastation caused by Hamas’ attack on October 7, which claimed the lives of more than 1,200 Israelis, only a few out of the 70 registered Israeli industry executives were able to attend.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with them and with all of the innocent victims in Israel and Gaza following last week’s horrific terrorist attack,” Smith expressed. She also mentioned that RX Global, the organizer of Mipcom and MipTV, is actively involved in “supporting humanitarian relief across the region.”
In the past week, France raised its security alert to the highest level following the murder of a teacher in the city of Arras, which is now under investigation by anti-terrorism prosecutors.
“Your security is our priority. In light of recent events and France’s increased national security level, we have heightened all security measures at the market,” Smith reassured. She highlighted additional precautions, such as “enhanced checks at all entry points to the Palais and the increased presence of security personnel inside and outside the Palais, as well as reinforced security throughout Cannes.”
